Meghan Markle has become something of an icon of our generation for a number of reasons — her poise, her philanthropy, her Americanness in the midst of British royalty. And even before she was the Duchess of Sussex, Markle was already an icon for her style; style which always includes, without fail, a pair of killer heels that she somehow makes it seem easy to spend hours on end standing or walking in at royal functions and events.
Now, while we might not necessarily have a slew of royal functions to attend à la Markle (sigh), we could certainly take a page from the duchess’s book when it comes to pulling off heels comfortably and seemingly effortlessly (unless, of course, you’re rocking the Elizabeth Olsen-deemed most comfortable heels ever, in which case you probably don’t need a trick). Lucky for us, Markle’s foolproof trick for rocking heels pain-free and avoiding blisters is pretty simple: her shoes are just a smidge too big.
Fashion expert, Harriet Davey, explained the tactic as such: “Celebs often go a size up — or even two — in the shoe department when they’re at an event or on the red carpet and it’s for one reason we can all relate to: to avoid blisters.” And while this is useful year round, the trick proves especially helpful when summer rolls around (just a year away, no big deal). This is because when it’s hot out and you’re wearing sandals that don’t confine your feet, the result can be that your feet expand.
Okay, so let’s say you take this advice, buy shoes a size larger than you normally would, and then end up tripping and falling all night long. Classic. Fear not, for just as a royal always comes prepared, so will you. “A trick of the trade is to stuff the toe with padding like tissue or cotton wool, and this can be taken out once they feel like they need a bit more room in their shoes,” Davey says. With this in mind, going a size up will give your feet ample room to expand and shrink with the seasons, and the cotton balls or tissues can make up the difference.
